RED Araucana ~ Large Fowl
(A new variety of Araucana under development)
Red Araucana Chicks |
5/23/2008 update . . . My first Red Araucana chicks are hatching from my Spring 2008 show birds. They look promising on color, size, and tufting (the vast majority are rumpless). The chick's base color is still a mix of e+ and ewh (notice the darker, striped, wild-type chicks and the lighter wheaten colored chicks) but I'm working toward homozygous wheaten as a base. |

4/5/2008 update . . . I showed a pair of Reds (Large Fowl) at the APA District Meet In El Dorado, Arkansas this weekend. My Red cockerel went Reserve of Breed and Best of Variety (he's is only 5 months old) and the pullet was Reserve of Variety.
12/27/2007 update . . . For a few years I have been working to create a new Araucana variety, Red. The color has a historical base in the American version of the Araucana since it is the color of one or more of the birds imported from Chile by Ward Bower, Jr. In 1930. The color Red is as described in the APA Standard of Perfection and the Bantam Standard. I have been working on this color since 2004 and have managed to squeeze in five generations in that time. I have made a lot of progress this year, and currently have a Red Standard cockerel and pullet of excellent breed type that will be shown in the Spring of 2008. I showed a Red Bantam Araucana pullet in the Spring of 2007 and she was awarded first and Best of Variety (AOV). |
